Chairperson’s Message

Honourable performers, convenors, educators, guest speakers and family members; I extend a joyous welcome for your participation in the Paarl Valley Gala evenings on the 12th and 13th September, for the Junior and Senior’s respectively.

The PVE creates the platform for learners to develop and display their abilities through dance, visual arts, drama and music. At this year’s Gala, sixteen (16) of the ninety-five (95) affiliated schools or/and private institutions will be showcasing the top achievers as identified by the adjudicators.

We applaud the approximate 5000 learners who participated in the 2017 Eisteddfod and hope that through this exposure they are encouraged to grow in their love for the Arts. Entries were received from institutions in Vredendal, Malmesbury, Riebeeck Kasteel, Tulbagh, Wolseley, Worcester, Wellington, Stellenbosch, Kylemore, Blouberg, Durbanville and Paarl. 3 666 certificates were issued to individuals or groups during the season that started in May with senior singing and the dance categories, and followed by the other categories during August. There was an increase of entries in most categories, especially in the two new categories of reading and contemporary guitar categories and a decrease in visual art. A publication featuring prose and poems of creative writing pieces produced by learners will be launched in 2018. The increase in attendance at the Eisteddfod is commendable, as it enables the public to meet and appreciate different cultures thereby fostering mutual respect and harmony.

Distinctive gratefulness are extended to Melanie Pietersen and the twenty-four (24) convenors for their sterling work during the year to ensure adjudication and logistical arrangements are attended to with professional acumen. This is a noble act of Community Philanthropy; of educators and volunteers giving of their time and effort to support learners!

The PVE cannot exist without the ongoing enthusiastic participation of learners, educators at the schools and private institutions. A deep gratitude to Principals of these institutions for their contribution and for hosting the Eisteddfod at their schools. We salute the highly supportive Board Members for their valued insight into all aspects of the organisation.

We look forward to the continuance of what the PVE subscribes to, working together to promote and enhance the various art forms to build social cohesion and cross-cultural relations. Contact the PVE office if you are eager to share your expertise!

In harmony and for Art’s sake!
