GUIDELINES FOR ENGLISH RECITATION

1.                Refer to the General Rules.

2.                Entries are limited to THREE per section. N.B. Please try to avoid all three entrants for the same piece.

3.                Please contact the convenor if you have not been contacted before the end of the second term.

It is important that candidates report 15 minutes before the specified performance time.

4.                Please ensure that the piece to be recited is appropriate to the age of the candidate and that it is long enough. See guidelines in 6.

5.                ENTRANTS MUST PROVIDE THE ADJUDICATOR (at the performance) WITH COPIES of all poetry, prose and dramatic extracts for solo and group work. These will not be returned to the candidates after the piece has been completed but will be kept at the Centre to be referenced by teachers or candidates when taking part in future eisteddfods.

6.                Please observe the time limits. The piece chosen must be long enough for the adjudicator to be able to evaluate the participant’s ability, but not so long that the audience becomes bored. Times allocated on the tear-off slips are based on this time limit. The following is a guideline, not a rule:

Grade 1 to Grade 5 poetry: not to exceed 1 min. That means that the piece may be between 8 to 16 lines.

Grade 6 to Grade 7 poetry: not to exceed 2 min. The piece should be minimum 16 lines (for grade 6) and a maximum of 24 lines long. Prose passages must be approximately 100 words long.

Grade 4 and Grade 8 choral verse:  not to exceed 2 minutes for grade 4 – 6 and 3 minutes for grade 7 & 8. A maximum number of 25 participants per group will be permitted.

Grade 8 to Grade 12 poetry:  not to exceed 3 min. The piece must be a minimum of 16 lines and a miximum of 45 lines long. Prose passages must be minimum of 200 / 250 words long.

Grades 8, 9 and 10 monologue:    not to exceed 4 min.

Grade 11 and 12 monologue:        not to exceed 4 min.

Grades 8, 9 and 10 dialogue:        not to exceed  4 min.

Grade 11 and 12 dialogue:            not to exceed 4 min.

Please note that specific passages are not prescribed so that participants may select passages which appeal to them and suit their performing ability.

7.                Please note that the English section (indicated by P for POETRY) and the Afrikaans section (indicated by a V for Voordrag) are separate. Mime, debate and dramatic prose belong to the Afrikaans section.  Send entries to the correct convenor.

8.                Teachers must please take note of the following:

·                Poems which do not have an obvious rhyme scheme are not necessarily prose passages.

·                Selections from Roald Dahl’s Naughty Rhymes are regarded, as the author himself indicates, as poems.

·                A monologue is one person speaking (e.g. an extract from a diary and no dialogue). No conversation between two people may occur unless the person is relating what has been said by someone else in reported or indirect speech.

·                A monologue is usually written in the first person, singular or plural. Only one participant may enter. Any extract from a play or dramatised scene from literature involving one person speaking is appropriate. The extract must not stand in isolation but show a lead up to the scene and a follow-through. A brief introduction may be required. Please note that there is no dialoque or conversation in this section.

·                In a dialogue there must be at least two participants. Any extract from a play or dramatised scene form literature which involves a conversation between two people is suitable.

·                A Third person may recite the narrative sections if necessary

·                In a prose passage, a conversation between two or more people may take place. If this occurs the participant should attempt to vary the tone and voice to distinguish between the various people speaking, to avoid confusion. Only one person may participate in the prose section.

·                Please note that the prose passages do not have an obvious rhyme scheme.

9.                Teachers may not enter pupils for categories that are not specified in this syllabus, nor may withdrawn candidates be replaced by new candidates.

10.             Natural arm movements and facial expressions should be encouraged. Exaggerated and unnatural usage of voice and movement (gesture) will be penalized.

11.             No costumes or stage props will be allowed.

12.             Teachers are requested to observe the following: this is not a speech competition and pupils are not penalised because their mother tongue is not English. The adjudicator judges the following: clarity of speech, the participant’s ability to recite and the general interpretation of the piece chosen. The participant will not be penalised for speech impediments such as a lisp or inability to pronounce the English “r” or “th” properly. What will have a far greater impact on the general impression created is the participant’s understanding and his / her obvious enjoyment of the passage that is being recited.

13.             Please note that the adjudicator’s decision is final. If any problems are encountered, these must be specified in writing and directed to the executive committee.
